Experimental Guitar Show at Soda Bar, 3/23/13

This was my first year at the Experimental Guitar Show, organized by Sam Lopez who wasn’t performing this year.

The stage was completely dark and I was trying to capture it that way for the first few performers before I gave up and started using flash.

Most of the guitarists did their own take on the slow drone thing, the most interesting of which was the 9 foot guitar.

Liam is visiting San Diego for a couple weeks. He likes the Navy but isn’t going to be a lifer.

Emily has served me many a drink at the Soda Bar and Casbah. I hope she likes this very quick portrait.

From Kata to Ana to Una.

Rafter closed the night with a literal deconstruction of the guitar- asking the question of whether music is something created on an instrument or something done to it.

It’s not often you get to hear a guitar scream its dying notes.

Rudresh Mahanthappa brought his Gamak group to San Diego’s Athenaeum School of the Arts earlier this month.

I first heard Dave Fiuczynski with his Screaming Headless Torsos group almost 20 years ago. This was my first chance to shoot someone I was listening to in high school. Fretless guitar!

Francois Moutin and Dan Weiss rounded out the rest of the band.

Jason Robinson Group at Dizzy’s, 3/1/13

Musical mastermind Jason Robinson was in town last weekend and brought together some friends for a west coast version of his Janus Ensemble at Dizzy’s.

Jason brings more than just technical prowess to his music. He works themes from literature, philosophy, and mathematical principles into his music, and it’s always a pleasure to hear the layers of meaning fold in on themselves.

Rob Thorsen really shines in this context, given the freedom of the music to go to unexpected places. Duncan Moore is one half of the newest power couple in SD jazz, having made a very Wise choice. He’s the cover story in the latest edition of Troubadour and seemed lit from within.

Joey Carano’s contributions reminded me of Miles’s Circle in the Round tracks. I got one of my favorite fretboard shots of all time too.

This was my first time shooting at the new Dizzy’s location. Chuck Perrin cares about lighting, which makes it so much more enjoyable for me to work with the light instead of fight against it.

Despite minimal rehearsal, Ian Tordella brought masculine fire to the music.

On one song, his solo kept mounting in tension, building slowly to a most satisfying climax. His penetrating ideas are full of virility, the very thing life comes from. Even during the songs he wasn’t playing on, I could tell that things were gestating.

It’s not a mistake, it’s a “Westerlin” effect.

Sunset Cliffs at Sunset, 3/1/13

Back to the same spot as a couple days earlier, only using much shorter exposure to make less blur. These ranged from 1/8s to 5s. One thing I’ve been working on is incorporating golden spirals into the composition instead of the rule of thirds.
