Another great night of creative music around Little Italy. Billed as an Improviser’s Summit, I got to hear four voices harmonize in some most interesting ways. As an added bonus, no music stands! Click on a photo to go to the full gallery.

Joshua White lit it up, even if he wasn’t lit very well.

I only know Michael Dessen’s work through Cosmologic, of which I am a huge fan.

Mark Dresser gets lots of different sounds out of the bass, many of them super-heavy.

I see some of the same faces in the crowd at many of these shows. They can be just as interesting as the musicians. Sometimes they like having their picture taken and sometimes they don’t, and I’m happy to oblige either way. I’m not in the business of stealing souls, after all.

Prague, June 2012

Work brought me to Prague, what fun! Too bad my main lens broke on the way there, so I was stuck with ultra-wide or telephoto shots. That would mean a focus on architecture. At least it happened in the right city, which was never bombed during the war. Click on a photo to go to the full gallery.

The beer is fantastic in the heart of Pilsner country. This pub served Original Budweiser beer, not to be confused with the American brewery. Thanks to lawsuits, neither company can sell their beer in the other’s country. Which means they get these crisp, flavorful beers and we get fizzy yellow water delivered by Clydesdales.

Jazz and classical music is more popular in Europe than it is in the US.

Lovers engrave their names on locks, tie them to bridges, and throw the keys in the water. Here we call that vandalism and littering.

These little fish got their slow, inefficient revenge.

Crazy art scene. It probably has something to do with being able to drink in public.

Since I had a some extra time, I did a day trip to Plzen, home of Pilsner Urquell. A $5, 90 minute bus ride got me a comfy seat, Czech-dubbed Big Bang Theory episodes, and drink service by a cute Czech student. The bus line is called Student Express, and this is what they do. If you look a a bottle of the beer, you’ll see a gate in the red seal on the label. This is the gate.

Pilsner Urquell was the first Pilsner, characterized by it’s golden color and hoppy bite (for the time). Since it has to spend weeks at 40 degrees for the lagering process, this happens in a network of tunnels under the brewery.

The smell down there was yeasty and delicious.

You can’t get it unfiltered here in the states.

Europe is an interesting place. It’s always good to get out of your comfort zone and see a different way to do things. In many ways, they enjoy more freedoms than we do. They also pay much higher taxes in exchange for the free health care, 6 weeks of mandatory vacation, a year of paternity/maternity leave to be divvied up by the parents as they see fit, and safe streets. It reminds me that, compared to our older, European parents, the USA is a teenager that thinks it knows everything, is quick to provocation, and easily titillated. With a short history and continuous influx of diverse people, we are still working out how to make this a true melting pot. Someday I hope we get there.

Rail Them To Death at Tower Bar, 6/22/12

Back in Town form Prague, I picked this night to stay up late and finally adjust to the time difference for good. Sal’s band was playing early at Tower Bar. I played with balancing flash and ambient, as well as to test the new Lightroom 4 engine. Bouncing flash off a black ceiling doesn’t work too well.
