Over the past few years, I've come to know several musicians who function on another level. For them, the instrument ceases to be a "thing" and simply becomes a conduit for creative expression. Jason Robinson is one of those people who speaks through his horn. Emotion and enunciation are present in every note. At times both silky and ferocious within a few bars, he presented a retrospective of his latest releases. The night was bittersweet due to the fact that this was the last concert he'd be putting on as a San Diego resident.

Joshua White is looking leaner these days, and it's nice to see him so nattily dressed.

The large ensemble played through a few songs off Fingerprint, my favorite of his albums.

Ever the considerate bandleader, Jason made sure to give each player at least one featured solo.

The ninety-minute set included a few songs off his latest release, Cerulean Landscape, with the great Anthony Davis.
