Lestats Jazz Jam, 6/23/11

Lestats just started a new jazz jam session late Thursday nights- technically after midnight so it’s really Friday morning once it gets started. Click on a photo to go to the full gallery.

After a year of runnning into her at shows, I finally got to hear the lovely Sharon Dubois sing. She throws her whole body into a song.

Dabbers at Ken Club, 6/23/11

I’m still alive, just being really selective with my shooting schedule. This means I’m more available for hire, so if you need a photographer to capture your gigs, group shots, or events, please let me know. And I love a challenge.

Thursday night was a fun night. I went to the Ken Club for the first time in over a year, and yup, their beer lines still funkify the beer. And they still keep the lights dim on the bands. No wonder I barely come here.

This was my first time seeing Dabbers, although I’ve seen Zack’s other band, Kill Me Tomorrow, a couple times. Click on a photo to go to the full gallery.

They move around a lot when they play, which would be a good thing if it wasn’t for the slow shutter speeds. Getting sharp shots here is almost impossible, even with fast primes.

I love big distorted bass riffs. This is the perfect time of the year to blast this stuff at the beach.

Long exposure, for effect:

After the show, I drove down the street to catch the first Lestats jazz jam….

Yellowstone, Day 1, 5/26/11

Yellowstone Day 1 52611 © Michael Klayman-003

We left for Yellowstone the day after I finished up 5 1/2 years of working at the same job. This trip would be the perfect palate cleanser to bigger and better things.

We stayed in Mammoth for three days, so the first morning was spent in town, checking out the ancient springs.

The everchanging landscape will dry up whole hills and then new springs will bubble up to the surface elsewhere, swallowing up and trees that might be around. The scalding, mineral-laden water petrifies the trees from the roots up.

Bison were everywhere too. They always have the right of way.

Jason Robinson Farewell Show at Dizzy’s, 6/2/11

Over the past few years, I’ve come to know several musicians who function on another level. For them, the instrument ceases to be a “thing” and simply becomes a conduit for creative expression. Jason Robinson is one of those people who speaks through his horn. Emotion and enunciation are present in every note. At times both silky and ferocious within a few bars, he presented a retrospective of his latest releases. The night was bittersweet due to the fact that this was the last concert he’d be putting on as a San Diego resident.

Joshua White is looking leaner these days, and it’s nice to see him so nattily dressed.

The large ensemble played through a few songs off Fingerprint, my favorite of his albums.

Ever the considerate bandleader, Jason made sure to give each player at least one featured solo.

The ninety-minute set included a few songs off his latest release, Cerulean Landscape, with the great Anthony Davis.
