Victor Wooten at Belly Up, 4/18/11

Victor Wooten played an incredible show at the Belly Up last Monday night. Being this close to him blew my mind, especially while he was thwacking so fast! Click on a photo to go to the full gallery.
Last time I saw him was ten years ago at Irving Plaza in NYC. He brought a huge band with several guests, and the music didn't stop for three hours. This time was quite different- a quartet with no guests or opening bands. Just an evening with Victa.
Regi "The Teacher" Wooten was on hand to show that he was the originator of all the stuff his little brother does on the bass.
When he puts his arm in that "Chicken Wing" position, he flaps it almost fast enough to fly.
I shared a moment with the keyboardist, Stephen Weingart.
The band hangs out after the show to talk to its fans, which is the thing that keeps them so popular, in my opnion. There are lots of inspiring musicians out there, but just a small fraction of them are equally inspiring as people. I got to say hello and hand Victor my card- not something I've ever had a chance to do with a 5-time Grammy winner. Class acts, all of them.
There's lots more photos in the gallery, so click on a photo to go to the full gallery.
