Black Hondo, Stevie and the Hi-Stax, Old Tiger at Eleven, 1/29/11

Saturday night was the perfect night for some blues and soul. Click on a photo to go to the full gallery.

Old Tiger is one of my favorite new bands. You can bring your girl and dance to their rock solid beat, or sit at the bar alone and listen to stories about soon-to-be lost loves.

I heard a couple people in the crowd say they were surprised to hear such a soulful voice come out of a big white man.

They made fans out of the other bands too.

They've got a four song EP and full length live album available for free. They're so good, and a bargain at twice the price.

By the time Steve Harris and the Hi-Stax came onthere were quite a few people dancing up a storm.

Holding down a killer groove ain't no thing for Jake Najor.

Since it was so dim this night at Eleven, I had to stick with my fast primes, which aren't really wide enough to do a band like Black Hondo justice.

I liked them better than the last time I saw them. I met guitarist Jason Noble outside between sets and he mentioned how he was trying to put together a show with three bands that all have the word "black" in their names. I told him that he should bill the show as "Back in Black in Black in Black".

I liked them better than the last time I saw them. I love how the bass player moves while she plays. She ended up being in most of the final images for this set.

Photo-geekery ahead, if you're strictly a music fan you can stop now.

Eleven seems to have dimmed their lights. I remember that as the Radio Room, they had really bright lights which gave me great shots. The dim lighting lately means using my prime lenses exclusively, which limits my ability to get various shots that I'd like to. The slow shutter speeds softened my images considerably. The red lights bouncing off the red curtains needed to be tamed down, and I tried three different post processing schemes to see how they differed. I do this regularly- process each band in a night differently- but usually it's just for fun. This time, I really wanted to see which sort of color/saturation effect was most useful.

I think I succeeded the most with the Old Tiger set, since it's the one I did the least amount of tinkering with. I am also still using Pythagorean ruler lines for cropping and composition, which moves the intersection points closer together than what a straight 3rds ruler would do. This makes for more square crops. I'll probably change this back to normal soon, it's starting to feel a bit gimmicky.

If this kind of talk appeals to you, I can incorporate it more often. Just find me on Facebook, "like me", and let me know.
