San Francisco Trip- Gilroy Garlic Festival, 7/24/09
The timing of our Bay Area trip was so that we could hit the Gilroy Garlic Festival, something that Heather has wanted to do her whole life. We left San Francisco early so that we could get to Gilroy right when it opened. We were the first ones in line.

Gilroy is very much a small town and this festival is their big claim to fame.
Heather warned me that the whole town smells like Garlic, but I couldn't actually smell it until we got to the festival grounds. Then it was everywhere. We had a few of the garlic flavored treats, like garlic crab fries:
Shrimp Scampi:
The garlic ice cream, of course, which was better than it sounds:
And a garlic peanut butter cup, which was way worse than it sounds:
That ruined our appetite for any more garlic delicacies, and it was only 11am.
Other than the food, the people were the most interesting part of the festival.
Miss Garlic Queen:
After the festival, we found a bunch of area wineries that had some pretty views. The wines themselves aren't all that great, but tastings were free. Our palettes were ruined from all that garlic, so it's a good thing that the wines there are cheap. We found one place that had a self serve grill, so we cooked up some steaks and shared a bottle while listening to jazz.
What a perfect ending to our summer vacation.

Only during the picking season does the Garlic smell over take the region. It's so powerful that people don't stay for long. That's peanut butter thing was the worst thing I ever ate, but it didn't stop me from eating more. I love garlic in my food. I don't think its an event we will try again.
