Anza Borrego Desert State Park, 3/24/10

I took my second annual trip out to Anza Borrego desert last week, this time with a 100mm macro lens in tow. Click on a photo to go to the full gallery.

I made it a day trip, which meant that sunrise/sunset would be tough to shoot since I had a 2 hour drive to look forward to. The open shade was my best friend, especially with the macro lens.

Sunlight during the middle of the day works best as backlighting.

The macro lens is a lot of fun and opens up a whole new world that I haven't shot before. I find that the focal length is just a bit long for my taste, especially on my APS-C camera, making it effectively a 160mm lens. Flowers would sway in and out of the frame in just a slight breeze.

I met a guy who brings this tiki wherever he goes just to take pictures of it in strange places. He doesn't have a website, unfortunately.

That would have been the classic sunset shot, if only I had the patience to stick around long enough. But I felt the need for some overpriced pie for dinner, so I ended up doing my sunset shoot in Julian.

Next year, I'm spending the night in Borrego Springs so that I can shoot a sunset, night shots, and a sunrise. Anybody want to go camping next March?
