A Scribe Amidst the Lions at the Radio Room 7/31/09
My buddy Mike and his new girlfriend Lauren went out with us on Friday night for some Ono Sushi and then a show. Driving into Hillcrest around sunset on the last Friday of the month didn't mean anything to me until we hit the Critical Mass bike traffic just as we were coming off the 163, and had to hang out for 25 minutes in the left turn lane. I can appreciate the statement these bikers try to make, but they're going about it the exact wrong way. If you want cars to share the road with you, don't purposely block traffic for half an hour.
I didn't bring my camera to Ono Sushi since it was our first time getting a chance to talk to Lauren and I didn't want to freak her out. I did bring it when we all went to the Radio Room, of course.

I've been talking up A Scribe Amidst the Lions ever since I saw them here a couple months ago and really like their latest CD. They're nominated for a San Diego Music Award, so you should vote for them.

Since I just shot them here, I decided to try to find one post processing look that looked good and to just make slight adjustments off that. I didn't want to get the same shots and the same look as last time. I'm always trying to find something new in each set. Since the band was dressed up for the show, I decided to put them in an understated and confident light.

I got their first CD at this show, and now that I have both of their CDs, I can hear what kid of band they were and how they're progressing. I hear a heavy King Crimson influence, although more psychedelic. The bass player, Garrity, has a very similar style to mine so of course I dig his playing. He makes very good use of fretless bass and effects, without calling too much attention to himself.

The new Ultra Wide Angle lens came in handy for some interesting and slightly distorted closeups.

And especially for trying to cover such a wide stage.

Oddly enough, they're playing here again this weekend for the North Park Music Thing. I'm trying to decide if I want to go out Saturday night for a show or sleep in for a Sunday sunrise. I can't shoot Saturday's sunrise since I'll be getting home right before it, staying out most of Friday night doing long exposure photography. Ugh... decisions....
