High Rolling Loners, River City at OConnell's 12/27/08

Last Saturday night was country rock night, presented to you in 640 pixel-wide glory!

I've heard of River City, but this was my first chance to see them. After a couple acoustic acts they came on, with pedal steel!

They play various instruments to get their sound, and it was an interesting experience to listen to them. I'm just not a fan of the folk/country genre. Very photogenic group though, although the light wasn't very even across the stage, as you can see.

The neon lights and stage lighting at O'Connell's give a bit of a spotlight effect to the light, if caught right. It adds a dimension that makes it almost seem like they were playing a bigger stage.

High Rolling Loners headlined with a high energy set of very rocking alt-country tunes.

You might wonder why I came to a country show at all, and it's because I was their fill-in bass player a couple summers ago before they got their permanent guy. I hadn't seen them in about a year and a half. I thought I'd surprise them and just show up. Catching up on a few of the shows we'd played and how they're doing these days put me in high spirits for shooting their set.

Ryan's an extremely talented guitarist, which is part of what made the fill-in gig fun for me. And yes, he does know who he looks like.

While most drummers aren't 100% sane, at least Eric is the least manic one. He's a big fan of Elvin Jones and you can hear it a bit in his playing.

Matt Phillips is playing his dad's old Gibson EB-1 (I think). That's pretty cool. His parents were in the audience this night too.

They even brought up Al from River City for part of the set.

The boys are in the process of putting out an album, so they don't have a lot of gigs at the moment, but when they're back, they're going to be playing everywhere again.
