Heavy Love, Modlins, Silverleaf at the Ken Club 12/05/08

My plan was to go to Blackbox Studios on Friday night to see Microphone Mike's CD release party. I really like his band Hialeah, and even though I'm not a big fan of of the first Mic Mike album, I figured that his booty bass alter ego would at least make an interesting photo subject.  But when I got to the building I thought it was at, there was no Black Box Studios to be found. There was nobody milling about outside and I couldn't hear any music coming from anywhere, so that plan was shot.

WIth no Reader in the car, the only other show I could recall that sounded interesting was happening at the Ken Club. I got there while Silverleaf was finishing up their set.

They've got a good, mellow rock sound with an emphasis on songwriting and melodic bass playing. I could hear the hooks from the very first listen.

Next up were the Modlins. I've heard their stuff before but wasn't really sure if I could take a whole set of 60's Beatle-rock. They bring a lot of energy to what they do, though.

Good 3-part harmonies too.

Very dapper, but I can't imagine loading up all my gear, unloading it, playing a show, breaking down, loading and unloading again, all while wearing a suit that doesn't look to breathable. Nope, I'll stick with a t-shirt and jeans thankyouverymuch.

They commit 100% to this kind of music. The clothes, sounds, even instruments stick to the time period, and it's obvious they really like the music. There's nothing ironic in this music, unlike, say, Weezer's Buddy Holly video. Their set breezed by faster than I thought it would.

I've seen Heavy Love before, and they're a good fit with the Modlins. Both fun, danceable, bands, only Kerrie and the boys go down the Stax records/Motown path.

Let me just say that when I shoot live shows for money, which is not very often, I charge by the band member. You know how tough it is to get a full band shot of 7 people in a dim club? The best I could do was this one with 6 1/2 faces.

If there's a problem with taking photos of pretty women, it's that the photo doesn't work unless the woman looks pretty, meaning, a shot where she might look a bit awkward or off balance needs to be tossed. I had some shots where the other members struck a better pose, but with Kerrie in the frame, I had to choose the shot that was most flattering to her. It wouldn't work if the guys looked good but she wearing an expression like she was trying to open a jar of pickles.

I have no problem posting photos of her bandmates' silly expressions though:

They played all covers, which is fun for dancing and singing along, but I'd like to hear some originals. If they did play some, then damn, they can write in the style pretty well!
